Stephen Gaghan To Write And Direct The Division Film
Ubisoft’s adaptation of its successful video game The Division has land a writer and director in Stephen Gaghan who directed Gold.
The Division is a third-person shooter set in a dystopian New York City during the aftermath of a smallpox pandemic that spread throughout the city on Black Friday. You play as an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, more commonly known as “The Division,” who is given the mission of helping rebuild the Division’s operations in Manhattan. While there The Division is required to investigate what was the initial cause of the outbreak, as well as combat the criminal activity that resulted from it.
The game was developed and published by Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment with help from Red Storm Entertainment. When talking about the project Gaghan explained, “I’m excited to work with Ubisoft Motion Pictures and collaborate with their team at Massive Entertainment to bring The Division to the big screen. They’re great guys, exceptionally creative, and willing to take risks.” He went on saying “The game has been an enormous success, in large part due to the visual landscape they created, their vision of a mid-apocalyptic Manhattan. It’s immersive, wonderfully strange, and yet familiar, filled with possibilities. It’s also remarkable to be able to collaborate with Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal early in the process. We all feel the story Ubisoft created is more relevant than ever.”
As it stands Ubisoft is shopping the film around to studios along with its long in-development adaptation of Splinter Cell starring Tom Hardy. The Division is set for a 2018 release and will star Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain as the two main leads.
